Beat Bullying

Using the language of violence

Why do we use the language of violence to deal with difficult issues like bullying? For example we hear people talking about beat bullying or beating the bullies or bully smashers or stamping out bullying or bully bashing or bully busters and fight against bullying.

I first read an article in Mizz Magazine in the early 1990's titled "Beat Bullying". This is now one of the most common terms used for dealing with bullying in Britain, there is even an anti-bullying charity calling themselves Beatbullying. So why do we use the language of violence to deal with bullying?

It cannot be due to the lack of non-violent words we could use such as; stop bullying, tackle bullying, anti bullying, bully strategies, against bullying, beyond bullying, bully buddies, and so on. Is that the groups who use violent language want to sensationalise bullying? Are people using it in the same sense as those that want to "fight for peace"? They seem to be very contradictory.

'If you want peace, prepare for war," counseled the Roman general Flavius Vegetius Renatus more than 1,600 years ago, echoing the sage advice given nine centuries earlier by the Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu.

George Carlin quotes “If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten”

Violence breeds more violence. It does not have to be this way. Recently at Oslo's Nobel Peace Center, John Galtung said: "If you want peace - prepare for peace." John Galtung would describe peace as the 'capacity to handle conflicts nonviolently and creatively.

If we can find ways of describing our strives to deal with bullying in non violent ways we could be offering out positive models of behaviour that may really help in our drive to tackle bullying.
